Influenza in the UK
As last winter, H1N1v is likely to still be one of the flu strains that will circulate during the 2012/13 flu season. Therefore the trivalent seasonal flu vaccine for the coming flu season will protect against this strain and others that are considered most likely to circulate; an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) pdm09, A/Victoria/361/2011 (H3N2) and B/Wisconsin/1/2010.
The challenge for Leeds
In Leeds, there are 202,750 patients eligible for free flu vaccination on the NHS.
In 2012/13, a further 13121 vaccinations must be given to ‘at risk’ groups and to at least an additional 2360 pregnant women (based on 2011/12 figures) to meet the national uptake targets for these cohorts.
Last year, the NHS succeeded in vaccinating 78.2% of over 65s. In addition 52.7% of at risk patients were vaccinated along with 62.1% of at risk pregnant women. The uptake among pregnant women without a long term condition was 39.4%.
