Clinical research and trials

If you have treatment in the NHS one of your treatment options may be a clinical trial. Clinical trials are research studies which involve patients and are designed to test new ways of:

  • preventing disease;
  • screening/diagnosing conditions;
  • treating illnesses; and
  • improving quality of life.

Research - why is it important?

Research helps us to develop new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases and illnesses so we can continually improve the care we give to patients.

There are a number of leaflets/booklets available to help you understand what clinical trials are:

Click here to access the following information leaflets:

  • Clinical trials: what they are and what they’re not; and
  • Understanding clinical trials.

For many years clinical research has taken place within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) across a range of healthcare settings. LTHT currently has the highest patient recruitment into clinical research trials in England!

Clinical research in the Trust is currently focused around five core strengths, which are:

  • Oncology;
  • Applied Health Research;
  • Dentistry;
  • Musculoskeletal Disease; and
  • Cardiovascular Disease.
