Background

Lord Leitch, in his Review of Skills, recommended the Government aspires to have 400,000 apprentices in learning by 2020. In February 2009 the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, committed to delivering 21,000 extra Apprenticeships across the Public Sector.

What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are a work-based training framework designed around the needs of employers, which lead to national recognised qualifications. An Apprenticeship can be used to train both new and existing employees.

There are three levels: Apprenticeships (Band 2 posts); Advanced Apprenticeships (Band 3 posts) and Higher Apprenticeships (Band 4 posts). They are available to people who are at least 16 years old, not in full-time education and live in England.  

What is an Apprenticeship Framework?

Apprenticeship Frameworks usually take one to two years to complete and consist of:

  • A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2, 3 or 4.
  • Keys Skills Qualifications: Communication, Application of Number, ICT (information and communications technology), Working with Others and Problem Solving.
  • A Technical Certificate such as BTEC or City & Guilds Progression Award.

What types of Apprenticeships can be undertaken?

Here are some of the subjects in which you can undertake an Apprenticeship:

  • Health
  • Health and Social Care
  • Business Administration
  • Laboratory
  • Pharmacy
  • Estates
