Leeds is a thriving city of over 750,000 people. Compared to England, Leeds has a significantly higher proportion of 15-29 year olds (26% compared to a national average of 20%), including more than 60,000 students at its two universities.
Leeds is recognised as one of Britain’s most successful cities having transformed itself into the most important financial, legal and business service centre outside London.
Overall the health of people in Leeds compares well to other major cities in England. However, this comparison masks wide inequalities in the health of people within Leeds. A fifth of the Leeds population live in areas ranked in the 10% most deprived in England and life expectancy at birth varies by 10 years between the most and least deprived electoral wards in Leeds.
The main causes of ill-health in Leeds are circulatory disease, cancer and respiratory disease. NHS Leeds is committed to working in partnership to combat these causes and the disparity in health outcomes between most and least deprived by helping the people of Leeds to lead healthier lifestyles.
