This page provides information on non-routine immunisations available so that you can protect yourself against major diseases.
Seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine
Influenza (flu) is a respiratory disease, which can be more serious than a common cold. Symptoms include headache, high fever, cough, sore throat and severely aching muscles and joints.
How do I get vaccinated?
Each year the influenza vaccine is offered to everyone over the age of 65 or those of any age who have a medical condition that places them in one of the at risk groups. If you fall into one of these categories your GP may be able to offer you a free flu vaccination in the autumn.
Vaccination must be repeated every year, because the influenza virus changes and the vaccines are adapted to reflect this. For further information about the flu vaccine, please click here.
Swine flu vaccine
The swine flu vaccination programme began on 21 October 2009 and the highest-risk groups were offered the vaccine. Vaccination for those in the initial clinical at-risk groups will continue over the summer. Vaccination for healthy children under five years stopped at the end of March 2010.

Travel vaccinations
When you travel abroad to certain other countries, you may need extra vaccinations to protect you from diseases that are not normally found in the UK. To find out which vaccines you may need, please download a copy of the health advice for travellers information leaflet or pick one up from your local Post Office. Alternatively contact your doctor, practice nurse, or travel clinic for up-to-date information on the immunisations your child may need.
