Every year, millions of people around the world die and millions more become ill as a result of smoking tobacco. Although many people in the UK understand that smoking is harmful to the health of smokers themselves, the dangers of tobacco smoke for non smokers is less well understood.
NHS Leeds has been working closely with the University of Leeds and ASD Pakistan to develop a resource pack for Muslim religious teachers so that they can educate their local communities about the dangers of second hand smoke.
All over the world, religious teachers in different faiths have supported health improvement within their communities. However, this resource is one of the first in the UK which helps Muslim religious teachers to work as public health advocates and to specifically support the prevention and control of smoking within their own communities.
There are many sources of information on smoking in the UK but religious teachers, as respected individuals and community leaders, hold a unique position. They can be a credible source of information about the harmful effects of tobacco both to smokers and non smokers. They can also encourage people to make changes and to adopt more healthy behaviours within their communities.
You can download the resource materials from this page. We are currently working on a Urdu version which we will upload to this page as soon as it is completed.
If you have any comments about the resource pack please do get in touch.
