Working with Makkah Mosque

Caligraphy inside the dome of Makkah Mosque in Leeds

NHS Leeds is committed to working with the local community to people have access to services and support, to support this work we have been working with Makkah Masjid in Leeds to develop materials for the Muslim community.

To help us develop these resources we are grateful for the support we have received from the Imam of Makkah Mosque, members of reperesentative bodies such as the British Muslim Forum as well as other local mosques and community partners.

We are pleased to have produced a number of documents to help local Muslims make more informed choices about their lifestyles as well as information on how they can access support services.

To date we have produced:

  • Islam and health - a guide for Muslim communities
This guide gives people advice and information on how they can protect and improve their health by making changes to their lifestyles. This includes advice on a balanced diet, regular mental and physical exercise and advice on how people can prevent or reduce the risk of developing long-term illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.
  • Domestic violence - a guide for Muslim communities
This resource helps local people understand the Islamic perspective on relationships within the home and its strong condemnation of violence within relationships. The information includes stopping and preventing domestic abuse, details of local support services and how the community can work together to support victims.
  • Prayer timetable for Makkah Mosque Leeds
A prayer timetable was produced for Makkah Mosque which also promotes free NHS Health checks available to people aged 40-74. The NHS Health Check programme aims to help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease.
