An event designed to help young people understand more about their future options will give them a chance to try their hands at becoming DJs for the day.
NHS Airedale, Bradford and Leeds is one of a number of organisations taking part in the ‘Your Future in Your Hands’ event giving primary schoolchildren in Inner North West Leeds the chance to meet positive role models from different occupations. The event is taking place at the West Park Centre on Wednesday 20 June 2012.
The event, organised by the INW Extended Services Cluster and NHS Airedale, Bradford and Leeds, provides year six pupils with a chance to meet professionals from a range of employers across the city. It aims to raise the aspirations of primary schoolchildren while also getting them to think about their futures.
One of the highlights of the event is the chance for young people to find out more about a radio career with support from a DJ from Bramley’s internet-based community radio station. Pupils will also be meeting people from a variety of professions ranging from nursing, hairdressing and the police.
As well as learning more about potential future careers, the children attending will also find out how they can play an active role in their communities. It will also allow them to understand and respect people in different professions.
Tina Leslie, Health Improvement Practitioner (Neighbourhoods) for NHS Airedale, Bradford and Leeds, says: “This unique event will give young people a chance to meet a number of different people working in a diverse range of professions. Every year we try to encourage pupils to take part in activities that demonstrate some of the non-traditional career routes available to them. Last year children got the chance to find out about working within a circus and this year, thanks to Bramley community radio, they can find out more about and try their hands at being a radio DJ. As a result they will be able to take away an understanding of some of the opportunities available to them as they progress through education and into work. We want to take this opportunity to thank all those who have given up their time to make this event possible.”
‘You future in your hands’ will take place on Wednesday 20 June at the West Park Centre from 8.30am – 3.30pm.

INW Extended services Cluster
All clusters have a multi-agency steering group that vary in their structure and formation. They have been developed around existing local partnerships (e.g. families of schools, neighbourhoods) with flexible arrangements to allow for the fast-changing developments within Children’s Services.
