Makaton Workshops
Makaton is a language programme which promotes basic communication skills and encourages the development of language and literacy skills through signs and symbols. It is designed for those currently working with children with speech and/or language difficulties.
The Leeds Speech and Language Therapy Service, funded by Leeds NHS Community Healthcare in partnership with Leeds City Council, is able to offer Makaton workshops to practitioners in Leeds.

Makaton New Beginners Workshop: £26.00**
The Beginner's Workshop is an introduction to Makaton and teaches signs from stages 1, 2, 3 & 4 and also the additional vocabulary. The use of Makaton symbols is introduced and explored and there are plenty of opportunities for practising Makaton signs. The manuals include the line drawings for the signs and symbols.

From January 2010: On receiving notification of your place on the course, you will be required to send a cheque for £26 made payable to Leeds PCT for the cost of the manuals and sign pocket book. This payment should be sent 2 weeks prior to the start of the course.
Makaton 2 Day Foundation Workshop: £26.00** (to include participants manuals and a pocket sign book)
This is an introduction to the use of Makaton signs and symbols and how they can be used to support children with communication difficulties within early year's settings. A nationally recognised workshop.

This course will:
- Provide you with the history, design and structure of the Makaton Core and Resource Vocabularies.
- Explain how the signs used with the Makaton Vocabulary are derived and be able to support their use with reference to appropriate research.
- Teach you about the Makaton symbols design themes and how to draw them by hand and use them in a variety of other ways with and without signs to suit users? needs.
- Teach you the signs and symbols from Stages 1, 2, 3, 4 and the Additional Vocabulary in their daily environment, and use techniques for placement, directionality and movement.
- Provide you with information on the different approaches available to develop the communication skills of a wide range of Makaton users.
- Provide you with information about the other Makaton Training Courses and Workshops and associated Resource Materials

Makaton 3 Day Sign and Symbol Enhancement Workshop - £40.00** (to include participants' manuals)
This is a highly intensive, practical and nationally recognized workshop. It aims to develop delegates signing and translational sklls to a high fluent level and to look at the application of these to support children using Makaton within their early years setting.
Prior attendance at either a 2 day Foundation or 2 day Beginners workshop is essential together with delegates supporting children using Makaton on a regular basis.

All delegates must pay the fees as manuals can not be shared.
The courses are nationally recognised by the Makaton Vocabulary Development Project (MVDP) and are run by MVDP Regional/Local Tutors/SLTs.
